Gordon Clark has been the Field Director of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch since November 2003. Coming to Public Citizen from the peace and disarmament movement, Gordon has 21 years experience in grassroots organizing on the local, state and national level. Starting with the formation of a local peace organization in his hometown of Doylestown, PA, shortly after his graduation from Brown University in 1982 with a BA in Psychology, he went on in 1996 to become National Executive Director of Peace Action (formerly Sane/Freeze), the nation’s largest grassroots peace organization, with a five-year stint as director of the New Jersey Peace Action affiliate in between. In these positions Gordon appeared frequently on radio and TV programs as well as published op-eds on issues such as the military budget, nuclear weapons programs, arms control treaties and U.S. foreign policy. After leaving Peace Action in 2001 Gordon founded (and still coordinates) the Iraq Pledge of Resistance, a network of activists and organizations following the nonviolent principles and discipline of Gandhi and King to end the war in Iraq. A rabble rouser at heart, Gordon is continuing his organizing ways at Public Citizen, mobilizing activists and local groups – both in the DC community and around the country – on campaign finance reform, Congressional ethics, and civil justice issues. His favorite recent protest involved pulling together a cadre of activists to dress up in Tom DeLay masks at a lobbyist-organized fundraiser for the embattled member of Congress in November 2005, and offering the lobbyists pork sausage (as well as tax breaks and regulatory relief!) as they entered.
